The problem of temperature monitoring in the cold chain
In some sectors such as food, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, temperature control during all stages of the supply chain is essential to preserve the quality, hygiene and safety of the transported products.
Indeed, in the absence of a constant temperature there is a risk of thermal shock, which can alter the organic, chemical and physical properties of foodstuffs or pharmaceuticals, so breaking the cold chain can lead to product spoilage and reduced shelf life.
One of the most critical steps in the supply chain is the transport of goods. Of course, vehicles for transporting fresh and frozen products are designed and manufactured to ensure that the temperature is maintained during the journey through the use of refrigeration systems. Added to this is the fact that the cold chain is regulated at European level for the transport of fresh and frozen food as well as for pharmaceutical products. Nevertheless, without suitable tools, it is impossible to monitor the cargo temperature of one or more moving vehicles in real time and have a centralised control of the fleet to intervene in real time in the event of temperature anomalies in the cargo compartments.
Every step in the cold chain can be critical, but the transport phase is the most delicate one if good temperature monitoring and control tools are missing. The use of intelligent sensors makes it possible to monitor the movement of goods in real time and maintain an uninterrupted cold chain.
Why choose Axitea?
More efficient processes
Integrated and connected sensor technology allows all shipments to be controlled and planned, thanks to full visibility of the vehicles’ location and the loading temperatures, with real-time alerts in case of any discrepancies within the transport process.
Increased productivity and reduced costs
Maintaining temperatures is essential to guarantee the quality of perishable products. Reliable cold chain logistics can reduce the risk of spoilage of goods and thus reduce waste.
Lower risk of sanctions
European regulations on the transport of products such as medicines or foodstuffs are very strict. Keeping the temperature of these products under control reduces the risk of incurring sanctions.
Improved quality of service
For a producer of perishable goods, the choice of a reliable transporter goes beyond regulatory compliance. For a transport company, being able to rely on integrated temperature control systems that can demonstrate the integrity of the cold chain is a differentiator appreciated by the market.

Main Features
Axitea manufactures integrated systems for temperature management in refrigerated transport vehicles. Each system involves the installation of analogue and digital probes connected to the internet that transmit data to a proprietary web platform developed by Axitea.
The service includes an initial setting of the temperature ranges for each vehicle and the time required to determine the alarm. These thresholds may vary from vehicle to vehicle or even be different within the same vehicle by sectioning the load compartment at different temperatures. The calibration process of the digital probes takes place at a third, specially selected, independent and Accredia-certified body. Every 12 months each probe can be brought into the climatic chamber for recalibration to be sure of its proper functioning.
The probes transmit temperature information to the web platform, sending an immediate email alert if the temperature goes out of range and also sharing vehicle identification data, including current geolocation. The customer, with this data, thus has the possibility to act promptly by taking the necessary corrective actions, e.g. alerting the driver who may have inadvertently left the tailgate open.
The platform offers both real-time visualisation of the temperatures of each vehicle and the data history, so that no information is lost and checks can be made on past situations. It is also possible to extract historical data for documentation purposes, also to share with third parties, e.g. the transporter's customer.
The possibility of having a history of out-of-range alerts can also be useful for scheduling priority maintenance work on specific vehicles, if, for example, the same vehicle continues to show temperature anomalies over time.
The platform is easy to use, requires no special training, and allows you to view reports, graphs and a real-time map of the fleet in operation.
