Logistics 4.0 and digitalization, the new security challenges of the logistics sector

The reference scenario

In recent years, digitalization has led to an important evolution of the logistics sector towards what is now called Logistics 4.0, i.e. the application of Industry 4.0 paradigms to the supply chain world, which translates into new storage, handling and transport systems.

Security must therefore include a large-scale integration between physical and logical protection of critical logistic assets.

The main risks of physical assets are represented by thefts, both of goods from storage warehouses (less frequently during the transport phase), by external parties or unfaithful employees, and of vehicles (almost 1,500 truck thefts per year, with only 47% of them recovered).

It is also essential to ensure the integrity of goods, safeguarding them from fire in the warehouse and from spoilage during transport, e.g. by ensuring the cold chain.

Not only security: one option in the logistics sector is to have platforms that help to interpret big data and be even better performing in a competitive, increasingly difficult and crowded scenario: being able to monitor sensor data, IoT device data and dat about vehicle and movable object movement, helps making time and economic efforts more effective.

The driver’s work quality is also extremely important. They must be put in a position to travel in complete safety and to know the routes without the risk of finding themselves in difficult situations. In particular, in companies with a considerable number of vehicles, it becomes essential to track the transports accurately, in order to constantly monitor the service status of the entire fleet and organize the work in an optimal manner.

The new major challenge for the logistics sector - also in light of the exponential e-commerce growth of e-commerce - lies in cybersecurity management.

Today, cyber threats increasingly and more dangerously affect logistics and procurement phases and processes, dangerously undermining business continuity, which is crucial in today's just-in-time production and distribution system. The slightest malfunction of an information system component, due to a cyber attack can therefore have serious consequences in terms of direct costs, loss of customers and damage to reputation.

Companies in the transportation, warehousing and delivery industries were among the top three targets hit hardest by cyber attacks in 2019.

Axitea responds to the logistic sector’s security needs with integrated and Tapa certified services that offer protection to physical and digital assets.

Axitea, a TAPA (Transported Asset Protection Association) Partner, offers "TAPA by design" satellite security solutions, which integrate TAPA security principles from the early design stages. For logistics companies, having a TAPA certified company as a security provider means ensuring the containment of unpredictable and harmful events.

Through the Fleet Management web portal, customers will be able to locate their vehicles wherever they are, view the routes travelled and receive alerts if they stray from the designated route, all correlated with detailed reporting (kilometers travelled, fuel consumption, hours and driving styles, etc.).

Vehicle security is guaranteed by monitoring alarms for unauthorized vehicle access and start-up, tailgate opening and fuel theft, carried out 24/7 by Axitea's Security Operation Center.

Physical and cyber protection

For the drivers’ safety and for regulatory compliance purposes, Axitea offers panic, sickness, cabin-door-opening alarm, video surveillance on vehicles services and real-time data downloading from the digital tachograph.

Protection against theft and damage of the goods stored in the warehouse and vehicles is entrusted to the video surveillance and alarm monitoring systems (theft, fire) and to transport integrity control system (e.g. cold chain).

To make loading and unloading operations safe, it is possible to use anti-collision systems at the loading bays of logistics centres, where dedicated sensors and video cameras with artificial intelligence identify potentially dangerous situations and launch a sound and light alarm that allows the employee and /or driver of the vehicle to realize the danger and take safety.

In order to secure the IT infrastructure, there are several solutions available to protect the data network, workstations (PCs, Servers), and e-mail traffic, plus an in-depth analysis of the cyber risks of the entire Supply Chain (e.g.: company, suppliers, shippers, carriers, customers, etc.).
