Waste Management: a tailor-made solution for S.E.S.A.

Context
Intelligent waste management - together with water, energy and traffic management - is becoming increasingly important to develop Smart Cities. Increasingly widespread in all regions, the companies that deal with waste management support the growth of a solid market by involving operators in the various processing stages: from collection to transport to disposal and recycling.
Anti-pollution regulations in the waste sector are becoming increasingly complex and strict, causing a rise in costs and forcing operators to continuously search for innovative processes in order not to lose profitability. This objective is also achieved through the use of technologies - such as IoT sensors, RFID, GPS - which provide significant operational benefits and support the development of this sector.
The collaboration with Axitea
S.E.S.A. (Società Estense Servizi Ambientali) was established in 1995 with a majority public shareholding, and its corporate purposes include separate waste collection, recycling, disposal, transport, and waste plant design, development, construction and operation.
The Company is currently engaged in the development of environmental technologies for waste obtained from separate collection, including energy production, to replace simple waste disposal activities.
With the aim of reviewing its processes and making them more efficient and effective, S.E.S.A. turned to Axitea, which suggested the creation of a customized, integrated solution to digitally manage all the different aspects of the process.
The proposed solution was suitable for the "Piano Nazionale Impresa 4.0” (National Business Plan), the government's initiative launched in 2016 to support and encourage companies that invest in new capital goods, and tangible and intangible assets (software and IT systems) that are functional to the technological and digital transformation of production processes.
Targets achieved
Axitea's services have made the waste collection process more efficient by digitizing and controlling the various phases, while at the same time increasing the fleet safety level, and complying with the "high technological content" and "remote control by computerized systems" plan requirements to increase production process efficiency.
In particular, the installation of digital sensors for weight control and analogue sensors for filling level evaluation have provided a new and useful exchange of information with the company software, and a consequent automatic control of the collection process.
The project
Axitea exploited its technological and vertical expertise to create a tailored-made platform, capable of following the entire circular path of waste management activities carried out by the company.
Thanks to a simple web interface and the new data generated by the loT devices installed on the vehicles, the process progresses are analyzed in real time and fundamental instructions are issued to optimize the collection process.
Axitea’s systems also feature self-diagnostics capabilities and are reconfigurable remotely - a fundamental feature to ensure full effectiveness of the solution over time.
Tailor-made integrated solution
Axitea’s solution for S.E.S.A. covers the following application areas:
- Intelligent monitoring on a dedicated platform: thanks to an extensive network of IoT sensors, Axitea has enabled S.E.S.A. to constantly monitor the weight of the waste collected, record the number of unloading actions, monitor the level of vehicle filling and the degree of compaction, and understand when predictive maintenance is required.
- Security: every vehicle is connected to the SOC and their activity is monitored remotely 24/7 to guarantee their security. Remote engine block and driver recognition are just some of the features included on all vehicles in order to increase their security.

- Route optimization: by monitoring vehicles in real time, the waste collection activity can be enhanced, new routes can be added for moving vehicles, and speed, duration and travel times can be monitored.
- Analysis: Axitea’s solution provides detailed reporting that allows predictive analysis, aimed at cost reduction, in particular.
